Historyhe Strand, was constructed in 1920. A popular venue it accommodated films and stage productions. It operated until the late 1960s. A few years after it closed it was reopened as a roller rink and later, a furniture store.
The Strand had a capacity of 1400. A unique feature of the theatre was that is could accommodate both motion pictures and stage productions. In 1930, the theatre was sold to Western Cinemas Ltd., who remodelled it so that talking pictures could be screened. The Strand screened its last pictures in the late 1960s.
During the 1970s it was used as a roller skating rink and it now a shop for a charity organisation.
NotesThe Strand Theatre is highly valued by the community for the cultural contribution over decades in many entertainment forms, the building dominates the streetscape and has retained the distinctive elevations and detailing from the original design despite changes to the ground floor. It complements the streetscape and contributes to the Conservation Area as a heritage item.
