The awards are launched each year on 17 February, the anniversary of Banjo's birth and close in May, with winners announced in August at the annual Orange Readers and Writers Festival. Introduced in 1991 by the Banjo Paterson Committee, the awards are now supported by Orange City Council and Central West Libraries.
